The beggars are becoming a problem in The Capital; their physical deformities and constant presence are scaring away the tourists. It is up to Mour Diyae, Director of Public Health and Hygiene, to clear the streets, a job he quickly passes on to his competent assistant Keba Dabo. While Mour sees the problem as a way to self-promotion, Keba approaches the task with a zeal born out of his own childhood of poverty and pride. Soon, after beatings and repeated imprisonment, the beggars leave the streets, but a new problem arises. People must give alms to the poor to insure spiritual favor and earthly rewards. A marabout, or holy man, tells Mour Diyae that he will become Vice-President if he gives certain gifts to real beggars on the streets. But the beggars now congregate and receive alms at a house far out of town and they see no need to return to the streets to help the man that persecuted them. Mour Diyae is in a dilemma, made all the worse by the frustrations of his young, new, second wife. The predicament: between a rock and a hard place

The Beggar's Strike (1979 in French and 1981 in English) is set in an unstated country in West Africa in a city known only as The Capital. Undoubtedly, Senegalese author Sow Fall writes of her own experiences.

Mour Ndiaye is the Director of the Department of Public Health and Hygiene, with the opportunity of a distinguished and coveted promotion to Vice-President of the Republic. Tourism has declined and the government blames the local beggars in The Capital. Ndiaye must rid the streets of beggars, according to a decree from the Minister. Ndiaye instructs his department to carry out weekly raids.

One of the raids leads to the death of lame beggar, Madiabel, who ran into an oncoming vehicle as he tried to escape, leaving two wives and eight children. Soon after, another raid resulted in the death of the old well-loved, comic beggar Papa Gorgui Diop. Enough was enough, declared the beggars.

For the beggars, they were good citizens practicing a `trade' that supports the ethos of the Islamic nation: giving and receiving. By tradition, people of the city need to give alms to beggars in exchange for prayers for long life and prosperity - for `self-preservation.' Zakat is one of the obligatory Five Pillars of Islam in which a portion of one's wealth is given to the poorest of the poor, the people of the streets. It is, therefore, a religious duty. The beggars are disgusted that they have to pay the price for tourism and economic progress.

For the beggars, they are as necessary to citizens of The Capital as the air they breathe. "Where will you find a man who's the boss and who doesn't give to charity so that he can stay the boss? Where will you find a man who's suffering from a real or imaginary illness and who doesn't believe that his troubles will disappear the moment a donation leaves his hands? Even the parents of a man ... expecting to be condemned, have recourse to charity ... in the hope of an acquittal." Their strategy to express their repugnance of the raids is to get organized - into an alliance, an allegiance, a union - and strike!

If the beggar's strike, how will people manage to fulfill their religious duty. And that is the premise of the story.

Mour Ndiaye wants to ensure he gets the promotion. He consults a holy man who issues specific instructions to give alms to the beggars, but only to those in their usual locations. However, the beggars have left the streets and moved en masse to the new Slum-Clearance Resettlement Area, a remote location outside the city. Ndiaye panics. People panic. They drive to the resettlement area and form long queues. Ndiaye is in a ridiculous predicament - his job is to eliminate the beggars from the streets, but in order to receive a promotion, the holy man says that the beggars have to be on the streets so that Ndiaye can provide them with generous charity. How can Ndiaye convince them to return to the streets so that he can become Vice-President?

The novella - a long short story or a short long story - of only 99 pages is comical satire, full of wit and succinct dialogue. It's a delightful, fun, engaging tale, but with enough situational substance to deserve the 1980 Grand Prix de Literature de l'Afrique Noire.

light little satire of class dynamics and superstition

Mour Diaye, the Director of the Department of Public Health and Hygiene, clears the streets of his unnamed African capital of beggars. In return, he hopes to be promoted to vice-president of the nation. To ensure his appointment, he consults a marabout - a Muslim holy man (according to the book's glossary) - who instructs him to offer a sacrifice to the beggars in their customary locations. But the beggars are all gone!

La Grève Des Bàttu was originally published in French in 1979. In this English translation (from Dorothy Blair) of the little novella, the author pokes fun at government bureaucrats, at superstition, and at hypocrisy of many sorts. The tone is playful and mocking; and the book is a fun, light read.

But the whole plot hangs on one magical assumption which never really worked for me: throughout, the beggars have significant leverage in that all kinds of powerful people are required by their marabouts to give sacrifices to beggars. So when the beggars go on strike, the people have to come and find them. Yet it doesn't ring true, either in fact or as a plausible suspension of disbelief. While it is entertaining to see long lines of fancy cars pulling up to the home where the beggars have holed up, coughing up the wealthy to make their required offerings, the flight of fancy doesn't feel quite airworthy.

If you come across this book and want to enjoy some mild satire, I recommend it: I encountered it in a little bookshop in Banjul, the Gambia, and at 99 pages, I figured I had little to lose. But I wouldn't seek it out. It was made into a film (entitled Bàttu) in the year 2000, directed by Malian filmmaker Cheick Oumar Sissoko.

If you want satire, I've just started Ngugi wa Thiong'o's Wizard of the Crow (2006): nothing mild there! And if you want another short but compelling example of Senegalese literature, I recently enjoyed Mariama Ba's So Long a Letter (1981), which explores the travails of women in Senegal's polygamous society.

Len Deighton was trained as an illustrator at the Royal College of Art in London. His writing career began with The Ipcress File which was a spectacular success and was made into a classic film starring Michael Caine.

Since then he has written many books of fiction and non-fiction. These include spy stories and war novels such as Goodbye Mickey Mouse and Bomber which the BBC recently made into a daylong radio drama in 'real time'. Last year Deighton's history of World War Two, Blood, Tears and Folly, was published to wide acclaim Jack Higgins called it 'an absolute landmark'.

Three of his Bernard Samson stories - Game, Set and Match - were made into an internationally aired thirteen-hour television series. These were followed by Hook, Line, and Sinker. He is at present working on the third Samson trilogy, Faith, Hope and Charity.

Deighton's detail and panache carry his plot

I liked this book but I think the plot was a bit hard to accept at points. I very much enjoy Deighton's authorial voice for his nameless protagonist and this made it quite enjoyable for me. I find his writing style very appealing. But the plot of this particular story wasn't entirely convincing.

A Muddled Mess

I've read Len Deighton's spy novels in the past, but somehow I never came across this one before. I think I know why: it's one of his lesser works, definitely not as good as the Bernard Samson novels or some of his World War II books. While Deighton is a good author, this (one of his earlier efforts) is largely forgettable.

The story begins with our hero (who remains nameless throughout the book) living in Paris. We spend 30 or 40 pages with him, playing Monopoly in French, going to parties, drinking with his friend and eccentric painter, and various other mundane activities, before the plot begins. You don't ever really get a hold on what the espionage part of the plot is actually about: instead, it's all very murky and uncertain, and the author leaves you wondering about everything that occurs. Finally, when one of the characters gets killed, things begin to become more interesting, but then the plot takes some confusing turns again, without the author giving you any help as to what's going on. The nameless hero apparently works for some intelligence organization, but you never really know who, or what he's supposed to be doing: everything just happens.

There are some good moments in the book, and good quotes. My favorite is when one of the characters intones that "Rich people who give away money need to be quite sure they're not trying to buy something." The scenes early in the book when the characters are playing Monopoly in French are rather fun. That being said, the book is rather silly and overwritten, and I didn't enjoy it that much...

Logically enough the authors begin with a chronological sequence of events in the study of mass communication. They talk about the theories, assumptions, and personalities who shaped the field in its infancy. Various media forms are given attention in subsequent chapters.

This section of the book starts with the assumptions of the magic bullet theory in the early days of media research. It is explained how these assumptions and early theoretical works proved inadequate to explain the complexities of the actual workings of media upon audiences.
In the final section of the book media in contemporary society is addressed. This book accomplishes its goal of providing a history of media research and bringing readers up to date on current theoretical thought.

Not only does the book give excellent theories but also gives numerous examples of how these theories apply to daily life and the many facets of communication as a whole. Well worth the price and the time. Especially helpful if working on a thesis.

Kindle version needs editing!

SCENE BREAKS!!! The Kindle version of book is missing the scene breaks, "* * *", or even a change in paragraph formatting. All the paragraphs in each chapter just run together, even though the scene changes many, many times. Overall, a good look behind the movie. The added detail was great and enlightening. Definitely a fun read. BUT SCENE BREAKS!!!

Search delves where few novelizations have delved before

As a Trekkie--or a Trekker (to use the more politically-correct term)--I love just about all of the older versions of the Star Trek series. But my favorite movie (at least from The Old Series) is "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock." Not only did I enjoy the way the script flipped the moral concept of "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" (which was the theme of the previous entry "The Wrath of Khan"), but I thought the Star Trek universe itself was expanded. There were 2 new classes of starships introduced ("The Excelsior" and "The Grissom"); new alien races popped up; the Klingons were brutal villains; and more about Vulcan and its rituals was explored towards the end. And more of "The Enterprise" crew were given classic lines or scenes. Though the plot still centered around Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, everybody else played pivotal roles (from the captain of "The Excelsior" to a backwards-speaking alien).

While all these things made "The Search For Spock" my favorite movie, there was still a bit lacking (in terms of total character and plot development). That's where Vonda Mcintyre's novelization of the movie kicks in and makes "The Search For Spock" even more appealing and dare it be said "fascinating."

Mcintyre's novelization delves into the complex depths of a love affair between seemingly cold Vulcan-Romulan science officer Saavik and Captain Kirk's son (and co-Genesis Device creator) David Marcus. Mr. Scott's grief over losing his nephew in "The Wrath of Khan" is also fleshed out; as is Sulu's career move towards a higher rank in Star Fleet. And leaving no stone unturned, the glossed-over relationship between the Klingon heavy Kruge and ill-fated spy Valkris is revealed. Mcintyre gives each character and scene from the movie greater detail and humanity. She even adds Dr. Carol Marcus to the plot (where in the movie, there is no mention of the fate of the Genesis Device's chief architect).

It's too bad that Mcintyre wasn't tapped to lend her talents for character development to the original "Search For Spock" movie. If she had, there would be a real argument for making it one of the all-time great sci-fi flicks. But the novelization stands as one of the best of The Old Series literary takes.

Good writing, bad concept.

It's a real shame that Vonda McIntyre's excellent writing had to be hamstrung by being forced into the general plot of the third Star Trek movie; the very concept behind this book -- bringing back the character of Spock after he'd quite efficiently and irrevocably been written out of the series in the previous movie -- was just plain stupid, and there was no possible way to do it well. Granted, writing him out in the first place was a mistake, but it was one that there was virtually no way to repair. Certainly, this was not the way.
Which, as I say, is a real shame; other than the fact that the basic concept is ridiculous and impossible, the book is excellent. (But aside from THAT, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?) The characters are well-handled, the rebellion of the Enterprise command crew and their theft of the Enterprise is delightfully done, the idea that they would all, without hesitation, scrap their careers for loyalty to a fallen comrade is commendable; everything about the book is wonderful...EXCEPT for the basic underlying concept.
