The teenage son of a former slave joins a cattle drive from Texas to Abilene, Kansas, in an entry in the My Name is America series. Joshua is a competent, level-headed boy who works hard, loves his mother, and keeps God in his heart. Despite the bigotry of the trail boss, the Captain, Joshua is determined to prove himself on his first drive. Through encounters with rustlers and others, stampedes, crew frictions, and the multitude of difficulties and challenges inherent in the job, Joshua holds his own, proves his worth, and earns some respect from the Captain. Myers tells a compelling story in which the source of the drama is the drive itself, and all the hardship of life on the trail. Scene after scene is vividly told, including a downright gory, fatal trampling of one of the cowpunchers during a stampede. Readers gain a real feeling for the period and setting, and a strong sense of what a cattle drive entailed. The hallmarks of Myers's workthorough research and solid writingare evident here. Wow! If you're looking for a Wild West book, this is the one. I'm sure you'll love how the story leads off, and how it ends. This story begins when a teenager reaches the age to go on a cattle trip, and is totally psyched, but did not know what was In store for him. What he learns is

Simple;

1.AIM BEFORE YOU SHOOT 2.HOW TO ROPE A CATTLE.

This is also a very touching, and emotional story, but Joshua puts it together perfectly. The part in this story that I liked the most was when they reached a town called; Abilence. Abilence is a rough town where you're sure to get in a fight ,and you wont be disappointed! Joshua goes through some rough times but makes it through the whole trip. I give this book a 5 out of 5.

I bought "The Journal of Joshua Loper" hoping to read a true account of a cowboy. I did not have to reach page 158 to notice that the "journal is a work of fiction." While the library research was quite extensive, he missed the realities and language of the culture. No normal, free young man in a ranching environment would still be fumbling with a rope at 16. He would have a good handle on it by age 11.
I cannot imagine a South Texas cowboy of that era calling men "guys", black people "colored" and horses "animals". These terms are more midwestern, perhaps more educated than was common among the people of that time.
Finally within a week of Austin he has blacks picking cotton in May. Cotton might be picked in August, but even in Texas, cotton takes a while to mature after it is planted.
The one thing that saves this book is the humor. Otherwise, it is the college description of a description. For the real thing read the real thing, or better yet, do it.

Joshua Loper and seven others are driving a herd. Joshua is pushed harder by the captain of the drive because of his race.In the end Joshua is one of the best known herders and in the end gets paid the most money because of his hardwork. The captain and Joshua have more respect for one another at the end of their trip.
I have two opinions about the book good opinion it is very discriptive well written, exciting, and enjoyable. Another opinion is the rambledon and on about things I thought were less interesting to me

Originally published in 1953, this adventure classic recounts Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's 1943 escape from a British internment camp in India, his daring trek across the Himalayas, and his happy sojourn in Tibet, then, as now, a remote land little visited by foreigners. Warmly welcomed, he eventually became tutor to the Dalai Lama, teenaged god-king of the theocratic nation. The author's vivid descriptions of Tibetan rites and customs capture its unique traditions before the Chinese invasion in 1950, which prompted Harrer's departure. A 1996 epilogue details the genocidal havoc wrought over the past half-century.

Seven Year in Tibet - Top Notch.

The story of a dramatic escape by Heinrich Harrer and his climbing associate Peter Aufschnaiter from and Indian internment camp after their arrest by the British when they were attempting to climb Nanga Parbat, at the outbreak of World War II. The book details their journey across Tibet including their near demise with the Khampas, before reaching Lhasa and in my view, discovering a way of looking at life very different to our own. The book then goes on to cover Heinrich Harrer's relationship with the Young Dalai Lama and the Dalai Lama's enthusiasm to learn more about the world he lived in. The book also provides an insight into life in Lhasa before the coming of the Chinese. Finishing with the onset of the Chinese occupation and the flight of the Dalai Lama, I found this to be a very well written book and it can be seen throughout the book how the very personality of the author changes from how I would describe as something not to far short of arrogance at the beginning to someone who cared very much about a people who just wanted to be able to get on with a way of live that had lasted for centuries and which to a great degree they were content with, but due to circumstances beyond their control, they were unable to do. I read this book after visiting Tibet myself in 1998 and the contrast between the Tibet described in the book and that which I saw was a sharp one. Heinrich Harrer himself returned to Tibet in 1982 and observed the changes himself (detailed in 'Return to Tibet', more of a thesis than a story, but nevertheless essential reading after 'Seven Years in Tibet'), noting the loss of much he had held dear when he was there in the 1940's. If you Heinrich Harrer's true story of Tibet, read the book - the film adaptation does not fit the storyline of the book and Heinrich Harrer himself is portrayed in a much poorer light early in the film than the book, which I feel is not fair. Another glaring error is that the film shows Heinrich Harrer in Lhasa after the Chinese arrive - Heinrich Harrer and the inaugerated Dalai Lama had already left Lhasa before the Chinese arrival.

A Worthy Read

The movie is powerful, but I certainly also recommend the book. Seven Years in Tibet tells the story of Harrer's escape from British imprisonment, and his exile in Tibet. Written in very plain and accessible English, it nonetheless conveys the powerful impressions - the danger, the cold, and the exotic experience of a new and foreign culture. Readers will undoubtedly be moved and impressed with his account of the Tibetan people. There is, unfortunately, relatively little of the book dedicated to his immediate tutoring experience of the Dalai Lama (only one chapter - but it is a valuable one). Much of the book discusses his escape and the trials and tribulations he and his mountaineering companion faced en-route to Lhasa. In spite of that shortcoming, the book remains a vital perspective on the Tibetan culture as it existed prior to the Chinese takeover in 1950. Anyone concerned about the Tibetans should read this book by a very trusted friend of the Dalai Lama.

W. Hamish Fraser was, until his retirement, professor of modern history at the University of Strathclyde. His publications include A History of British Trade Unionism 1700-1998 (1999) and The Coming of the Mass Market (1981), and he has also edited volumes on the histories of Glasgow and Aberdeen.

I bought this book for my History of Modern Britain class. The book is very well done, and actually starts with a historiography of England before the unification into Great Britain.

The book itself is organized in a pleasing time line fashion and does not skip around like some history text books do. The chapters are easy reads, but you will learn a lot of good broad information from 1707 up to almost present day. The book focuses on general topics such as economy, political figures, rural vs urban, and more bigger topics.

This is a great book if you want to know a little about a lot. It does not go fully in depth as some other books, but that is because it is such a long period of time to cover.

The part that i didn't like about the book was it had to few visual aids, and the pictures it did have were black and white. Sure this keeps cost down, but it also takes away from some of the readings. Its more of a personal preference, but i like to read and see what was happening and who i am reading about.

The book looked barely used. There was no writing in the book and the cover and pages were not bent, which is great because I do a lot of highlighting for my upper level classes.
